Review of Vera Drake (2004) by Matthew W — 08 Aug 2008
Once you get past the thought of Delores Umbrage performing abortions, this is a great movie. Really captures the period. Even without the plot of the main character's actions and legal trouble, this would be a good movie of the characters just going about their day in post-war London. I didn't think the movie was preachy, and the acting from all cast members was outstanding.
Recommend watching this with "The Last Hangman" as a double feature. It not only portrays the same basic period in history, it also deals intelligently with important political and moral issues. It also stars a Harry Potter villain.
