Review of Van Diemen's Land (2009) by Jonothon T — 20 Feb 2010
A group of convicts escape from a Tasmanian prison. A classic Australian story of desperation, brutality.. and cannibalism. An excellent film to watch when you're in a quiet or serious mood. Shot in the beautiful wilderness of Tasmania, in a quiet and almost minimalist fashion, the scenes of violence and depraved sentiments are strongly contrast and are memorable amongst the gorgeous scenery, while at the same time making themselves right at home despite this because Tasmania's beauty is of the dark, soulful, almost melancholy variety.
Still, at points, the film feels thin, but this helped by scenes when the tension surrounding a murder is almost unbearable, and I would have liked to connect with the characters just a tiny bit more- just a little extra depth and I would have been truly disturbed.
