Review of Van Diemen's Land (2009) by Robin T — 05 Jun 2010
"I'm a quiet man".
One of the darkest films I've seen in a long time. Grotesque would be an understatement. Beautiful (yet unforgiving) nature though and MUSIC that made a huge impact on me. It was just perfect, really adding to the madness of it all, the loneliness, the futility.
I'd say this is not a "first date movie". Sometimes things were so grim and bloody awful I couldn't hold back a nervous laughter. One can only wonder what went through the minds of these men, especially as things got worser along the trail. Overall great acting, photography and dialogue. It's a must see...if you have the stomach for it.
Final note: Having narration in gaelic made things even darker ;).
