Review of Trishna (2011) by Benjamin S — 11 Jul 2012
Michael Winterbottom's naturalistic very loose adaptation of the Thomas Hardy novel Tess of the D'Urbervilles is perfectly set against the backdrop of an ever changing India. The central couple played by Riz Ahmed and Freida Pinto may lack chemistry but that works in favour of the erotic, abusive and opportunistic relationship they share.
Not without it's flaws, Winterbottom's camera ocassional lingers to long on the dynamic surroundings but otherwise a powerful, unsettling tale that has proved it's worth 221 years after it was first written.
This is Winterbottom's third adaptation of a Hardy novel (after Jude and The Claim). Special merit to Amit Trevedi for his songs used in the film.
