Review of Torch Song Trilogy (1988) by Michael S — 27 Oct 2007
Picture this: A gay, closeted Iowa boy moving to Minneapolis in 1988 without knowing anyone. Seeing the advertisment (in 1988 mind you) for this movie and going to the movie theater alone and seeing lots of gay men in groups, couples, etc.
That movie /experience was overwhelming to me. I brought my mother up to Minneapolis, took her to see the movie, and told her afterwards, that I felt like Ed with the turpentine...that was my coming out.
Looking back, the movie is such a cliche...but you have to know how terrible it was growing up in the middle of the country during the time of AIDS.
