Review of To Rome with Love (2012) by Kenny V — 16 Jul 2012
This is 2/3's of a great Woody Allen movie. It is part Bananas, part Love and Death and part Play It Again Sam. Consisting of several unrelated stories, this plays very much like a De Sica farce. For the most part it works.
The weak link is the Jesse Eisenberg plot, not because it is poorly written, but because Eisenberg is not up to the demands of of the role -- a rather simple role at that. He attempts an imitation of a young Woody Allen and fails miserably.
He brings nothing of himself to the role and confirms that he was cast in Social network solely based on his resemblance to Mark Zuckerberg. The other weak link is Ellen Page, who attempts a young Diane Keaton imitation.
Unfortunately she plays opposite Eisenberg. Because we never are able to warm up to either of them we never care about them or their story.
