Review of The Wild and Wonderful Whites of West Virginia (2009) by Tavis B — 10 Feb 2011
Good follow-up to the docs and White Lightnin' that gets more into the family altogether, both today and in the past. However, the filmmakers do not seem to question the legal authorities' or the self- characterization of The Whites as fatalistic opportunists who are reacting to their bleakly exploitative Appalachian surroundings.
This enables a simplistic understanding that does not fit well with the reality of change, adaptation, and the well-portrayed happiness of the family diaspora.
