Dicevano che era un film sulla dialettica servo-padrone hegeliana.
Ma il film di Losey tratta anche altro: complesso edipico, conflitto 'working-class' con la 'upper-class' e puo' essere letto anche come adattamento in chiave moderna del Faust; in questo caso il servo, splendidamente interpretato da Bogarde, è Mefisto. Il padrone regredisce a una condizione infantile, infine verso l'autodistruzione.
Sublime.
