Review of The Queen of Versailles (2012) by Mark M — 24 Aug 2012
A little taste of western culture, made interesting because it gives us the chance to feel a little superior and criticize the rich as we watch and enjoy their fall. However, it truly demonstrates what we as a culture in America have become.
Conspicuous consumption, superficial beauty and using cheap money to capitalize on a scheme to tap into the greed of the little everyman has trumped the values that our wealth was originally built on.
If the viewer doesn't see himself in every scene, from the disfunctional marriage to the ignored children growing up on TV parenting (or in this case desperate foreign nannies) then he is blind. Fun to watch, but a little scary to think about afterwards as we witness not only the decline of an odd rich family, but a few root causes of the transfer of importance from America to other rising cultures.
