Review of The Phenom (2016) by Ryan H — 18 Jul 2016
To me the movie played as a political allegory. The superstar baseball player is the embodiment of the American Dream. But this movie says the dream is broken and that American values have become backwards. The filmmaking style itself reflects the disdain for American capitalistic values. Rather than quick editing and big dramatic moments, the movie is anti dramatic and stays on shots for a long time.
Kudos to Ethan Hawke and Paul Giamatti, two American movie stars, for making such a boldly subversive film. I loved it.
