Review of The Kindergarten Teacher (2018) by Tim M — 21 Oct 2018
Maggie Gyllenhaal turns in an extraordinary performance in a mostly ordinary movie. I have to bring up the elephant in the room here. The child Parker Sevak can't act. Writer and director Sara Colangelo shoots around him.
Considering he's the center of the film, for me it was a distraction. Considering the kid doesn't have a Wikipedia page i'll take it he's not an acting savant. Gyllenhaal plays a kindergarten teacher who becomes a little infatuated with her brilliant student.
There isn't a lot of meat on the bone here, but Gyllenhaal steals the movie (which isn't much of an accomplishment). This is a movie that could have been great at 45 minutes, but instead it's just ok at about an hour longer.
Final Score: 6.3/10.
