Review of The Great Beauty (2013) by Kace C — 21 Dec 2013
The Great Beauty is like an elegiac poem. I don't remember the movie in terms of scenes and plot points as much as I feel it resonating as a whole. While watching the film I thought I was lost in its maze of architect and parties, but this slight confusion paid off tremendously because by the end I felt I had understood its message.
The rich, smooth shots are dazzling and gorgeous, every frame radiating with wistfulness and even humor that is at the core of the film. The very ending has some of the most poignant and beautiful dialogue I have ever heard and elegantly sums up the meaning of the film.
What I'm trying to say, if I haven't made it obvious, is that this is one of those great films that works holistically. I could watch it again.
