Review of The Great Beauty (2013) by Niklas C — 04 Sep 2014
My favorite film of 2013. Sorrentino pays clear homage to Fellini while at the same time paving his own path in a unique look at modern day Rome and it's culture. All the while examining the meaning of life, or rather the meaning of "a life", through the existential narrative of an aging author.
Mash up Fellini's "La Dolce Vita", Bergman's "Wild Strawberries", and Malick's "Tree of Life". Might be a little over the head of some viewers, but like the title implies.
.. this film is absolutely beautiful in so many ways.
