Review of The Gleaners and I (2000) by Mary B — 19 Jan 2008
Varda, feminist French New Wave filmmaker, explores the act of gleaning, picking up the scraps of the harvest, While Varda has been criticized for creating an obtuse, meandering documentary I whole-heartedly disagree.
She puts herself, her subjectivity into the film itself, and explores her own de-valuation as an aging woman, to the heart shaped potatoes left behind by French farmers. The work mght leave you asking, what do I value? what do I throw away? How am I valued? How will I be thrown away? All that, and it's social action at it's finest, protest, breaking laws for food, and will most certainly leave you conscious of what you consume and what you throw away.
Brilliant work.
