Review of The Boy Friend (1971) by Kevin A — 20 Feb 2008
LOVE IT! LOVE IT! LOVE IT!.. Why cant l get it on dvd????? Twiggy is adorable and believeable.. Great songs, dancing and backstage sillyness in a tatty, down-at-heel sea-side theatre. Ken Russell's opening out the basic stage show into not only baskstage fun, but tacky (but brilliantly done) flea-pit performances are offset by the wild imaginings of what a visiting Hollywood director could turn these production numbers into is a just magic.
The film was cut in length for teh cinemas- and the "directors cut" although fascinating, makes you see why it was done. Anyone who has done live theatre or loves the old musicals will love this- as will anyone with a sense of fun and whimsy for simple pleasures.
Enjoy! (And let me know if you find it on DVD pls- lm desperate!)lol.
