Review of Swiss Army Man (2016) by Brian H — 03 Jul 2016
The body is our slowly rotting container that's filled to the brim with our hopes and dreams.
Swiss Army Man starts with Hank, an everyman that feels his unique desolation from dreaming his strange dreams and finding himself isolated by them. Then, Hank meets Manny, a magical corpse that first serves as Hank's survival, but quickly demonstrates a deeper purpose: helping Hank to navigate the narrow road between the alienated dreamer and the pragmatic adult.
This bodily comedy of introspection is a delightful world of silliness and shock, a world where we laugh at our own farting frailties and humorously confront the pure absurdity of being an eating, dreaming, crapping, loving, weeping, and hoping human being. As Hank survives through Manny's identity as a dead tool, Manny begins to ask the very core existential questions we all must ask if we are to have a handle on the hilarious seriousness of being a meat sack that thinks.
