Review of Sweet Charity (1969) by James C — 03 Oct 2007
The first time I saw this I was a teenager watching it with my mother. This time I was an old man watching it with my teenage daughter. I liked it even more this time.
Ah Bob. Ah the 60s. What a collision. This is an extravaganza in every way. Of course the choreography and dancing is all brilliant. Bob could say so much through his choreography, convey so many moods and emotions. He's very cool but also, amazingly for me, laugh out loud funny at times.
This is Shirley when she was still a great hoofer and not so much of a crackpot and John McMartin should be remembered forever for his performance in the elevator scene.
Bob doesn't do standard love stories. I really like that he doesn't shy away from the pain and difficulty of love but still manages optimism. The hippies at the end lay it on a bit thick but at least Bob steered clear of the bullshit alternate happy ending.
