Review of Stardust Memories (1980) by Willem W — 19 Jul 2007
This film sparked a big backlash against Allen. It's an homage to Fellini's 8 1/2. It's about a tortured filmmaker at a weekend retrospective of his work. At the same time, he's having fights with the studio on how to end his latest movie.
Where critics saw pretense, I see an inspired artist experimenting with form. This is a fine little film, with dynaite cinematography and a haunting appearance by the ethereal Charlotte Rampling. Also features an early appearance by the likeable Daniel Stern.
