Review of Stage Fright (1950) by Barbara O — 27 Oct 2008
So this is the hitchcock film the original audience hated because they felt lied to? I'm part of this post-usual suspects-generation and love twists and being lied to, so I was quite surprised that this didn't work for either.
probably for other reasons, but still. I felt the timing was quite wrong and way too slow - a problem I keep having with hitchcock every once in a while. and while it's not such a problem in his other films, timing is decisive here and as this film is rather off-beat, it didn't really work for me.
however: ironically in this let's call it "sort of failure", stage fright taught me a lot about how twists work and this makes me not regret having seen this at all.
