Review of Sorry to Bother You (2018) by Hankwmardukas — 28 Nov 2018
Sorry to Bother You is a fresh, funny and darkly insightful movie set in dystopian Oakland. Perhaps my favorite actor in the business right now, Lakeith Stanfield (Get Out, Death Note), stars as a young man named Cassius.
In need of a job, he takes one at a bizarre telemarketing company where if he uses his “white voice” he’ll climb the corporate ladder. While similar thematically to Get Out, I contend Sorry To Bother You is a more thought provoking social commentary.
While the movie has the typical hiccups of debut features, first-time writer and director Boots Riley does a fantastic job and clearly has a unique vision that I’m excited to see develop.
