Review of Solitary Man (2009) by Lori W — 23 May 2010
This movie starts and you have brace yourself for some overwhelming deja vu; there's Michael Douglas, our resident expert on The Great American Narcissist, spreading misery wherever he goes. And you can't help but think "I've been here before.
" And then, about 20 or 30 minutes in, something funny happens. You start to realize that even if you have been here before, it's been a long, long time since the "here" was this good.
Douglas, in top form, working from an articulate, literate and delicious screenplay, is leading the way through a very satisfying tale that seems to never go quite where you think it will. And to the last shot, you may find yourself thinking (as I did) "this could fall apart at any second"; and it's that last shot that I held my breath for.
"Please, please don't screw it up," I thought. Lucky for us, they did not.
