Review of Simple Men (1992) by J L — 14 Mar 2011
It's kinda funny how I have now seen most of Hartley's films and yet when I first start to watch Simple Men, it took me a few minutes to adjust to his unique brand of dialogue. Simple Men is a charming, funny and spontaneous film that features poetic yet almost experimental dialogue in hwo the characters interact with each other.
Simple Men is about two brothers who are on the run; one wants to find their revolutionist father, the other is running from the authorities after being double crossed by his girlfriend, which he loved, during a robbery.
Like pretty much all of his films, the plot really doesn't matter all that much. It's a road movie of sorts that addresses the relationship between men and women; love and desire. Harley's viewpoint on the these themes are fascinating and refreshing, just like pretty much everything he has done.
Did Hal Hartley ever make a bad movie???
