Review of Showgirls (1995) by Ethan R — 29 Nov 2008
Anyone who knows me knows how I feel about this film. I've seen it more times than I've seen myself in a mirror and I can never get enough of it. The film is so committed to its mediocrity that it manages to make a complete turn around in regard to quality.
Every second of its two-and-a-half-hour running time is exquisitely crafted by the clumsy hands of the gifted Paul Verhoeven. Elizabeth Berkley gets right to the soul of Nomi, or perhaps the throat. Her erratic acting style channels 50's era Brando, and I wouldn't hesitate to say it's the most recognizable performance since Brando's Stanley in 'A Streetcar Named Desire'.
Somehow 'Showgirls' always manages to fill some sort of existential void that I have and make me feel complete as an emotional and spiritual martian.
