Review of Showgirls (1995) by Linda M — 15 Mar 2012
This movie is a classic; Showgirls depicts Las Vegas with absolutely no sugar coating, including the graphic rape scene which is responsible for the film's NC-17 rating. It was brutal yet honest. Elizabeth Berkley played a pro-feminist in Saved By The Bell as a teenager and I can see how a feminist would want to to take part in a film like this.
It didn't glamorize prostitution or stripping and Crystal (Gina Gershon) pointedly remarked in several instances of the movie that it was the same thing while little Miss Nomi, the cute little ingenue, kept denying it.
This film would never make the Criterion Collection even though it should.
