Review of Séraphine (2008) by John G — 17 Sep 2010
If you weren't aware that this is a real person, you might be tempted to dismiss it as implausible...yet, there it is, right in front of you: the sneaky late night sessions with paint made out of calf's blood and candlewax (just a guess, since Seraphine never let on her 'secret' formulas), the fervent hymn singing, the endless trudging through the French countryside.
After a while it becomes clear that the film is constructed in the same fits and starts as the creation of a painting; some scenes are only a few seconds--others are more narrative. No sense in waiting for some kind of triumphal Hollywood bollocks.
Seraphine would be bored and leave to go back to her art.
