Review of Romper Stomper (1992) by Jean G — 01 Jan 2008
There was some controversy about this movie, and sadly the director succumbed to pressure by trying (in vain, during commentary in the DVD version) to interpret it moralistically as a condemnation of racist skinheads.
As far as I'm concerned, it is reminiscent of a Shakesperean tragedy. The skinheads could as well have been a band of Vikings or tribesmen, or any kind of last warriors in a world that no longer believes in their ideals, and on a path toward self-destruction.
A superb tragic drama.
