Review of Red Corner (1997) by Erin M — 18 Sep 2008
A film of the caliber and subject, dealing with chinese punishment and a man's struggle to prove his innocence need not be put in the hands of mediocre filmmakers looking to create an intense thriller for the sake of the audience's entertainment.
film such as midnight express took similar subjects and created masterpiece cinema out of it, films that showed a very grim and disturbing side of every day life. this is a show, which is the last thing it should be.
that is where its failure only begins. richard gere is a decent actor, but here I almost feel he attempted to create a deep film, but only had it come off as a star power name project. it lacks depth and any real emotional meaning, although it tries.
