Review of Ratcatcher (1999) by Lauren J — 04 Jul 2008
A beautifully bleak film that successfully portrays the dreams and anxieties of a child growing up in destitute conditions. Plot-wise, it really reminded me of the book A Tree Grows in Brooklyn (cramped apartment, alcoholic father).
James' growing isolation and depression over the course of the film is hauntingly portrayed in the claustrophobia of the bags of garbage piled outside and the memorable shots of James in the new housing units, sitting in a tub still covered with plastic.
When Kenny reveals that he knows James' secret it is just devastating. It's not an easy film to watch, but it is well worth your time. Oh, and can anyone recommend a light-hearted Scottish film? Do they exist.
