Review of Proof (1991) by Howie V — 29 Dec 2010
Sophisticatedly simple. Gwyneth Paltrow is an actress worthy of going toe-to-toe with Mr. Silence of the Lambs. She holds her own - and then some. In postmortem I had to check whether or not the role was written specifically for her.
The performances were believable which is not an easy task in a movie that deals with the delicate balance of higher-intelligence and mental illness. Usually these type of movies turn out to be mere case studies.
The actors got me to commit. Maybe/just maybe Paltrow over-plays it, in spots, but who's to say in a character with Hamlet-type depth. Proof is a big-small movie that does more than make you think: it's makes you care.
It's worth watching even if you don't have an interest in advanced mathematics. Fear not. There won't be a test. Two thumbs up!
