Review of Opening Night (1977) by Ben W — 04 Apr 2010
The opening acts of this film seem to restate themselves. gena rowlands character is struggling with a character that she portrays in the play featured in the film and, by extension, many things in her own life.
it wasnt until she visits a spiritualist that things got interesting for me. an internal force interrupts her normalcy in a very real (at least on screen) way. the most interesting part of the film is the result of that struggle when she turns the entire play on its ear.
the films meta-theatrical elements are hugely entertaining, but also provide great insight into what it means to make theater or film.
