Review of Mouchette (1967) by Luke P — 25 May 2008
A beautiful film, but also frustrating because of the narrative ambiguity. Mouchette's character is a victim of her surroundings, and she never really finds a way out. The film is difficult because of its harsh portrayal of reality, but still manages to convey some hope in the hopelessness, if through nothing else than the moments of hapiness Mouchette experiences--such as her brief encounter with a boy while enjoying a bumper-cars match.
