Review of Monsieur Verdoux (1947) by Martin T — 23 Sep 2009
"Monsieur Verdoux" is a very different Chaplin picture, compared to his earlier Tramp films. But the dark tone of the film does not completely remove his trademark charm, even though he is playing a serial killer.
And though murder is the subject throughout the film, the humanity is still there, particularly the final moments of Verdoux's life. I also found the montage about the financial downfall to be brilliantly made.
My only personal problem with here is the ending, because I just don't like films ending with an execution that much(except maybe Dead Man Walking). Aside from that, I found this to be a great dark comedy with an energetic and at the same time, melancholic performance by Mr.
Chaplin.
