Review of Mon Oncle (1958) by Andrew G — 15 Jun 2007
Rarely can movies change the way one percieves the world, but Jacques Tati's movies (although their are very few) have done that for me. They taught me to find the subtler comedy in the world. The comdey of habit, and natural rhythms.
This is his Modern Times, and his commentary on the coldness of the Modern Age. It funnily contrasts Mr. Hulot's riff raff archaic ways with that of his rich brother, lives in a perfectly clean machine for living in.
Criterion did a gorgeous job with this re-release, the first time I saw this movie was a cheapie library copy. The restoration was so good, it was like watching a whole new movie. Highly recommmende, but proceed with an open mind and a light heart, and definitly see it more than once.
