Review of Mary Reilly (1996) by Eric P — 02 Jun 2017
Julia Roberts took a lot of grief for this movie. It's true that her Irish lilt comes and goes, but the rest of her performance is quite good -- hampered more by audience expectations of a happy, plucky girl-next-door than anything she did on-screen.
As for the story, telling the Jekyll/Hyde story from the point of view of a housemaid is sort of genius. Had Malkovich played Hyde and someone like Colin Firth been cast as Jekyll, the movie would have been much better.
As it is, you have to suspend your disbelief regarding Mary's naïveté (c'mon, they're both John Malkovich) and go with it.
