Review of Martin (1978) by Brian B — 03 Mar 2009
Although he's best known for his blood-drenched zombie movies, George A. Romero's best overall film may be this low-key, character driven psychological horror film. Romero's script is the best he's ever written, and Michael Gornick's cinematography perfectly captures the dank, depressing, "living dead" quality of the urban setting. Tom Savini's gore is used sparingly and is highly effective, and there are flawless performances all around, with special mention going to John Amplas, who sadly never delivered on the promise of this early role.
Required viewing for those who only know Romero as the king of the zombies.
