Review of Lunacy (2005) by Anne H — 21 Jul 2007
A tour de force of... something. It's quite brutal, and with all his live action, very visceral. It's a nightmare where you don't know which option is worse- the hedonistic and capricious reign of the Marquis or the fascist reign of the doctors.
I wondered if it reflected the situation of formerly communist countries, where one has to wonder if the global capitalist system they've entered is really much better. Watching it in conjunction with Marat Sade is very informative.
The therapeutic funeral and the blasphemous nailing on the cross are particularly thrilling moments. Also, the Marquis' carriage on the highway is deliciously absurd.
