Review of Lovelace (2013) by Maria V — 27 May 2015
Changing an industry. So this takes a look at the personal life of Linda Lovelace (Amanda Seyfried), the woman who changed the adult film industry when she made the movie Deep Throat. Now this entire ordeal was before my time, so this isn't a story that I was all too familiar with.
All the attention to detail is here, and this has a rough-around-the-edges look to it, as if it were produced in the 70's. Also, all the costuming is dead on, and if you like seeing the loud clothing of the decade, this is just one level below American Hustle as far as quality goes.
What Lovelace is all about is the relationship between Linda and her abusive husband, played by Peter Sarsgaard. He plays a very slimy character, and it seems more often than not that this type of character is exactly in his wheelhouse.
Things do end up getting pretty terrible for her, almost entirely at his hand, but the thing is, they don't really set up Linda Lovelace as being all that likable of a character, or even all that relatable to.
Because of that, the story doesn't end up being compelling as it could have been. For being so infamous, she's actually pretty uptight, prudish and insecure, which is interesting, but it's just difficult to really get behind her, so to speak.
When you are done with this, you are just left with the feeling that it could have had more of a point to make, and could have just done more with it in general.
