Review of Lost in La Mancha (2002) by Dave C — 10 Feb 2008
One of the most heartbreaking documentaries about a film I've ever seen. Singlehandedly shows the rise, fall, and collapse of Terry Gilliam's epic attempt to create "The Man Who Killed Don Quixote.".
It's depressing because we see pieces of what would have probably been a fascinating and terrific film, and literally see it get washed away by floodwaters and pretty much every single other thing that could possibly go wrong on a film set.
I prefer this to Hearts of Darkness only because it packs more of an emotional gut-punch. Apocalypse Now was easily a more cursed production, but they got the film done. This thing never saw the light of day, and that hurts anyone who knows anything about what goes into making a film. A truly depressing, but engrossing look at a film that went down in flames.
