Review of Little Otik (2001) by Nicola J — 21 Apr 2009
'Little Otik' manages to be simultaneously funny & deeply unsettling, based on the Czech faerie tale of a childless couple who come across a tree stump that ressembles an infant. The mother's obsessive love brings the stump to life, and the cooing infant reveals an insatiable appetite.
Svankmejer's unique style works wonderfully with the story, and the paradox of a cooing infant and the horror he wreaks make 'Little Otik' unlike anything you've seen. Brilliant.
