Review of Les Misérables (1934) by Jeff B — 09 Sep 2008
Amazing film directed by Raymond Bernard about the convict Jean Valjean running from Inspector Javert. Harry Baur is perfect as Valjean, he really gave a great performance, probably one of the best of the 30s.
The rest of the cast is also great, I love the actor that played Marius's grandfather, it was a small role but he added a bit of comedy to the film. Even though it's nearly five hours long, the film is fast paced and I was surprised by how entertaining and exciting it was for a film made in 1934.
All of the technical aspects of the film are incredible, the score is memorable, the cinematography and costumes are wonderful, and the sets are awesome, especially during that final part of the film during the uprising.
What a film.
