Review of La Chinoise (1967) by Zoey P — 07 Jun 2009
Whether or not you think this is a good movie depends on the lens through which you look at it. I don't know much about the politics discussed in the film so maybe through that lens it's bad, but I think "La Chinoise" is a great exploration into "the reality of the reflection.
" It asks questions such as: where does believing end and acting begin? How do we create the identity that we present to others, and what contributes to that? It also made me think about identity and reality tv, because we are always aware that the characters know they are being filmed and we see them being filmed.
All of this makes for a great first 45 minutes or so. However, when the movie tries to have a sort of plot (the assination, ect) towards the end, it fails. A movie worth watching as a nontraditional, Godardian character study.
NOT a good intro to Godard AT ALL, don't see this until you've seen his pre-1965 movies.
