Review of Kumiko, the Treasure Hunter (2014) by Stephen A — 24 Mar 2015
The Zellner Brothers film is a mysterious and endearing film that's one of the most original "adventure" films to come down the pipe in some time. Based off of the fictionalized "true" story of Takako Konishi, the film actually is most socially potent in the first half which primarily looks at the stress and ennui that come from contemporary Japanese office life.
This section is blackly humorous in the most relatable sense, and we fully understand the character's desire to find a new destiny for herself. Entering the American half, Kumiko becomes more exciting and unpredictable, culminating in an ending that's tragic, uplifting, and necessary all at once.
Kumiko, the Treasure Hunter is certain to have you leaving the theater feeling a wide-range of emotions.
