Review of Knight of Cups (2015) by Jim W — 27 Mar 2016
A good but not great film by the great Terrence Malick. Malick, my favorite filmmaker tells the story (if one can ever call his films stories) about a screenwriter living the glitz and glamor of Hollywood and having a lot of sex with different attractive women, but feeling empty.
Malick wants to show the spiritual bleakness of Hollywood and, for the most part, does a good job. Christian Bale is superb in the film as the protagonist. The cinematography is beautiful as usual. Does the character come to a epiphany realizing his personal life is in a shambles? That's ambitious.
If you like Malick see this film, but it's not as good as THE TREE OF LIFE, THE THIN RED LINE, or THE NEW WORLD.
