Review of Key Largo (1948) by Alan M — 11 Apr 2008
Key Largo is a highly tense thriller, with Humphrey Bogart performing well as the disillusioned war veteran held captive by Edward G Robinson's gangster.
However, this movie is all about atmosphere and director John Huston expertly creates a sense of being trapped.
He achieves this, firstly, through tightly framed close-ups of anxious facial expressions. He then builds on this by anchoring the action in a gloomy and enclosed space, as the situation becomes more desperate.
The finishing touch is the groaning and banging sounds caused by the storm raging outside, which complements the visual techniques wonderfully.
