Review of Ju Dou (1990) by Greg S — 07 Apr 2007
Yimou is known for his amazing use of colour but his recent successes have fallen on the side of extravagant (though nonetheless breathtaking). Here is a more restrained use of colour but the effect is just as startling.
But there is substance to match the style in an engaging and moving story of love, deception and betrayal. A work of defiance in the face of patriarchal control which resonates not only within the context of its creation but also in today's world where policies are decided by people who seem to be so out of touch with the wishes of the many.
