Review of Indochine (1992) by Ian C — 06 Jun 2010
This is one of my favourite French films ever. The images are breathtakingly beautiful. It has a romantic and epic feel, the story may be a little too melodramatic for those who don't dig it but I just find it wonderful and heartbreaking.
It captures the complexity of colonial society very well. Although it's seen from the point of view of the French colonists, it is rather balanced. I especially like the complexity of the characters : none of them are really "good", they all have qualities but also big flaws, and that makes them more human.
The soundtrack is beautiful too, and the cast is top-quality.
