Review of In Darkness (2011) by Dominic K — 04 Aug 2012
It is hard to be critical of a film that is a harrowing true story of the horrors of the holocaust. There are many stories of survival that should never be forgotten and there is no possible way to portray the true horror that some of the people had to go through. However there is no denying that there have been numerous films about the war and judging this film as exactly that, there are moments where it feels done before. Where the film really succeeds is in how it is able to dawn over the audience. The scenes in the sewers are fantastically shot, the darkness that is suffocating the Jews, is used as a device as long lingering shots in a dark theater are harrowing. It grips the audience and the release at the end is also one for the audience. The acting is superb with a specifically strong performance from Robert Wieckiewicz as the sewer worker, Leopold Socha, that brings real honesty to the film.
The film successfully proves itself as both a captivating and powerful film.
