Review of Hi, Mom! (1970) by Jeremy R — 30 Sep 2008
Knee-jerk reaction time: "Experimental Brian DePalma film". Most of you shuddered, and all of you would be right. At times bizarre, unsettling, perverse, and sometimes downright disturbing, "Hi, Mom!" suffers primarily in that the viewer has no idea what DePalma is trying to say.
The satire is too serious and the comedy too alienating. What's left is disjointed segments which by themselves are none too effective. The scenes between Robert De Niro and Jennifer salt are funny and charming (if a bit too goofy), but there isn't much to justify the odd premise.
And, no, the title serves no purpose.
