Review of Hellzapoppin' (1941) by David B — 03 Oct 2009
A surreal, absurdly hilarious and whimsical musical, it's a self-reflexive film-within-a-film, as well as a film-within-a-cinema theatre, that literally breaks the fourth wall with ease. Screwball comedies and musicals have never been this fun.
Who cares about the plot? The plot was just an excuse to experiment with special effects for the laughs of it as well as to make catchy musical numbers. It's something I can watch over and over again but still find something new in every viewing.
