Review of Harlan County U.S.A. (1977) by Liz — 09 Dec 2010
An immersive documentary about a town of coal miners in Harlan county, Kentucky and their battle to unionize. Like most of Frederick Wiseman's films, this is they type of documentary which transcends the art form and becomes more of a cautionary tale or time capsule of a very important time in United States history.
Barbara Koople and her crew spend nearly a year filming these people and it really shows. Even the small nuances of body language are fully captured as we, as the viewer, learn and understand what these people are going through.
A beautiful snapshot of class struggle in America.
